The Washington Capitals, also known as the Caps, are a ice hockey team based in Washington, D.C. that competes under the Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference in the National Hockey League (NHL).

Established in 1974, as an expansion team alongside the Kansas City Scouts (Presently the New Jersey Devils), the Capitals have gone on to secure 13 Divisional Championships, two Conference Championships, three Presidents' Trophy and a sole Stanley Cup in 2018. The team has developed itself as a formidable side in the past few years.

The team currently plays its home games at the Capital One Arena which they share with the Washington Wizards of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The team also has minor league affiliations with the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League and the South Carolina Stingrays of the East Coast Hockey League.

Washington Capitals Stanley Cup History-

The Washington Capitals have appeared twice in the Stanley Cup Finals till date.

The 2018 Stanley Cup Finals featured the Washington Capitals opposing the newly added team Vegas Golden Knights. The playoff series started on April 11, 2018, and wrapped on June 7. The Washington Capitals secured the Stanley Cup victory for the very first time by winning in a five-game finals series. The Capitals reached the finals after a dramatic comeback from a 2-0 series deficit to defeat the Columbus Blue Jackets. Next, the Capitals defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins in a six game series which was followed by defeating the Tampa Bay Lightning in an intense seven game series to make the finals that season. Alex Ovechkin was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as the MVP for his consistent performances throughout the playoffs.

Looking back in time, the Capitals made their first Stanley Cup final appearance In 1998. However, the Capitals went down to the Red Wings in a five-game series.

How many Stanley Cups have the Washington Capitals won?

The Washington Capitals secured it's only Stanley Cup in the 2017-2018 season. They defeated the Vegas Golden Knights in five games with Lars Seller scoring the winning goal in the fifth game.
