In a tragic event that has deeply affected the hockey community, 16-year-old Colin Brown has died Wednesday morning from critical injuries sustained from a stray bullet which hit him during a shooting incident in St. Louis on Saturday night, per Fox 2 news.

According to a Sunday report from Fox, Colin was driving home with his father after attending a high school hockey game between Christian Brother College, where he was a student, and Marquette when the shooting took happened.

Around 10:30 p.m., as they traveled in their SUV, an unknown assailant fired into the vehicle, striking Colin. His father quickly drove to the intersection of South 4th and Walnut Streets, where they were met by the police and emergency medical services.

Colin Brown was brought to the hospital in an already critical condition. The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department reported that the shooting took place in the southbound lanes of Interstate 55 near Loughborough Avenue.

Per Fox 2 news, homicide detectives in St. Louis are working on following tips regarding the shooting since Monday. Various video footages obtained from the area of the incident are also being reviewd to garner further information.

According to his father Calvin, Colin dreamed of becoming a doctor, and on Wednesday afternoon after the doctors confirmed his death, he became an organ donor, and saved four lives.

Former NHL referee Tim Peel was one of the first from the NHL community who shared his prayers for Colin immediately after the shooting on Saturday night.

"Please pray for 16yr old Colin Brown who was shot and is in critical condition in St Louis...This was a random and senseless shooting. Absolutely tragic and heartbreaking," Peel wrote on X/Twitter.

Colin Brown's family release statement on the shooting

Colin Brown's father Calvin had released the Brown family's a statement on Facebook on Sunday morning, stating:

"First, we would like to express our gratitude to the SLMPD and the Illinois State Police, as well as the broader public safety community, for their continued efforts in apprehending the perpetrator(s) of this senseless crime against our beloved son, Colin.
"As a family and as a former law enforcement official with over 28 years of experience, we believe that greater efforts are needed in the City of St. Louis and the surrounding region to support the police and equip them with the necessary tools to combat such senseless, violent gun crimes.
"Please continue to pray for our son and his medical team. Fight for Brownie #72. Sincerely, The Brown Family."

Since Colin Brown's death, the family has asked for privacy at this time,

Chicago Blackhawks winger Pat Maroon also shared a message asking for prayers for Colin Brown through an Instagram story:

"The STL Hockey community got hit with horrific situation last night. Please send lots of prayers to Colin Brown and his family. You got this Colin."
