The team won four consecutive Stanley Cups between 1980 and 1983. They were an unstoppable force during that time period. However, they have not won a Stanley Cup since 1983.

The Islanders currently have the sixth longest Stanley Cup drought. They haven't lifted the Cup in 39 years, and are doing everything in their power to end the drought. The Islanders reached the Eastern Conference Final in 2020 and 2021, but were unable to get over the hump.

New York Islanders: Road to four consecutive Stanley Cups

Al Albour debuted as the New York Islanders' head coach during the 1973-74 season. His hiring completely turned the franchise's fortunes around.

The Islanders first started succeeding with Albour at the helm during the 1977-78 season. They won their first division title. Even though they lost to the Toronto Maple Leafs in the quarterfinals, the Islanders showed that they can compete with the best in the league.

Denis Potvin, Clark Gillies, Mike Bossy, Billy Smith, and Bryan Trottier were all players for the 'golden generation' of the Islanders. That core won the Stanley Cup together for the first time in 1980. Following that year, the franchise went on to win three consecutive Stanley Cups in 1981, 1982 and 1983.

The Islanders were fighting for a fifth straight Cup, but were defeated by the Edmonton Oilers in the 1984 Stanley Cup Final. Since 1983, the Islanders have not advanced beyond the Eastern Conference Final. They have qualified for the playoffs in 27 out of their 50 seasons in the league.

As of right now, the New York Islanders are sixth in the Metropolitan Division with a 26-22-5 record (57 points). They are tied with the Pittsburgh Penguins in points for the final Wild Card spot. However, the Penguins have four games in hand. The road to making it to the playoffs will be a tough task.

The Islanders play four of their next five games at home. They face the Seattle Kraken tonight at UBS Arena. Ilya Sorokin will get the start between the pipes. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30pm/ET.
