The Pittsburgh Penguins have won five Stanley Cups in their history, with those victories coming in 1991, 1992, 2009, 2016 and 2017.

The Penguins were part of the 1967 NHL extension to add more teams to the league. They got their name from the Mellon Arena, nicknamed "the Igloo." This was their home until the 2009-10 season.

The Penguins drafted Mario Lemieux in 1984. He emerged as an instant offensive force on the ice and became one of the game's greatest players. Pittsburgh became a regular presence in the playoffs in the late 1980's as they drafted and traded for other standout players.

They won the Stanley Cup in both 1991 and 1992 after drafting Jaromir Jagr.

Lemieux, the team captain, was diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease in 1993. He managed to return to the team after taking a year off and topped the NHL in goals during the 1995-96 season.

Pittsburgh Penguins: Financial troubles and revival

In 1998, the Penguins went through some financial difficulties and went bankrupt. In 2000, Lemieux emerged from retirement to become the NHL's first player-owner before retiring again midway through the 2005-06 season.

With Sidney Crosby in 2005, the Pittsburgh Penguins entered a new era. In 2006-07, Crosby, who was the NHL's top scorer at the age of 19, became the NHL's youngest team captain. He and second-year star Evgeni Malkin led the Penguins to the Stanley Cup finals in 2007-08, where they were beaten by the Detroit Red Wings.

Malkin led the NHL in points the following season, while Crosby finished third. The Penguins finished fourth in the Atlantic Division that year, but advanced to the Stanley Cup finals for the second time. This time round, they beat the Red Wings in seven games.

In 2009-10 and 2011-12, the Pittsburgh Penguins managed to remain one of the best teams in the NHL, winning three division titles and establishing a season record of three straight seasons with at least 100 points.

During that period, however, the team could not advance past the conference finals, losing to a lower-seeded squad in five of the six postseason games.

Pittsburgh then broke through in 2015-16, finishing the regular season on a winning streak that carried over into the postseason. The Penguins managed to win the Stanley Cup that campaign and followed it up with a repeat the very next season.
