Luke Hughes is an American defenseman who plays for the New Jersey Devils in the National Hockey League (NHL). He played college hockey for two seasons with the Michigan Wolverines, leading his team to the NCAA Frozen Four in both the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons. He was named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team in 2022 and Big Ten First All-Star Team in 2023. He was also named to the NCAA (West) First All-American Team in 2023, according to the NHL's official website.

Hughes helped the United States win the silver medal at the 2019-20 World U17 Hockey Challenge. As captain, he led his national team to a bronze medal at the 2023 World Junior Championship. On the family side, Hughes comes from an ice hockey lineage. He was born to Ellen Weinberg-Hughes, who played for the United States' ice hockey team, and Jim Hughes, a former ice hockey player and coach. His two older brothers, Quinn and Jack, were high draft picks in the NHL, as per reports.

Hughes, who is the youngest brother of New Jersey Devils player Jack Hughes and Vancouver Canucks star Quinn Hughes, penned a three-year contract with the New Jersey Devils on April 8, 2023. He made his NHL debut on April 11, 2023 against Buffalo Sabres. He scored his first NHL goal, which was also a game-winner, in a game against the Washington Capitals, as per the Michigan Wolverines' website. During the 2023-24 season, Hughes recorded nine goals and 38 assists for 47 points, setting a franchise record for rookie defensemen.
