By the age of 10, he was already playing in a competitive youth league.

In 1977, at the age of 16, he joined the Sault St.Marie Greyhounds of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) and immediately made an impact. He scored 70 goals and 112 assists in his first season.

Gretzky's performance in the OHL earned him a spot on Canada's national junior team. He helped lead the squad to a silver medal at the 1978 World Junior Championships.

In 1978, Wayne Gretzky was drafted by the Indianapolis Racers of the World Hockey Association (WHA), but he was quickly traded to the Edmonton Oilers. The young center quickly became the face of the franchise, leading the Oilers to four Stanley Cup championships in the 1980s.
