The 2010 NHL Draft was one of the most talented and anticipated drafts in recent history. With players like Taylor Hall, Tyler Seguin, and Cam Fowler among the top picks, there was no shortage of excitement leading up to the event.
However, looking back at the class a decade later, it's clear that there were some missed opportunities and players who were overlooked. This article will look at how the top 10 picks in the 2010 NHL Draft could have been redrafted.
#1 Edmonton Oilers: Tyler Seguin (Boston Bruins)
While the Oilers made the right choice by selecting Taylor Hall with the first overall pick in 2010, Tyler Seguin takes the top spot in this redo.
Seguin has become one of the NHL's top scorers and has consistently been a dominant force on the ice. Although Hall blossomed in the NHL, Seguin has had a more sustainable career. The Oilers could have used that upgrade on offense over the last decade.
#2 Boston Bruins: Vladimir Tarasenko (St. Louis Blues)
Tarasenko has been one of the NHL's top goal-scorers over the past decade and would have been a valuable addition to the Bruins' lineup. Tarasenko would have been one of the best forwards on the Bruins, and vital in playoff runs in the 2010s.
#3 Florida Panthers: Taylor Hall (Edmonton Oilers)
In the 2010 draft, the Panthers selected Erik Gudbranson as the third overall pick. However, Gudbranson has not lived up to expectations.
Taylor Hall falls to the third spot in this redo, but that doesn't diminish his talent or value. Hall has had a successful career, including a Hart Trophy as the league MVP in 2018. Hall could have been one of the most impactful players on the Panthers and even developed into a bigger star than he is today.
#4 Columbus Blue Jackets: Jeff Skinner (Carolina Hurricanes)
The Blue Jackets selected defenseman Ryan Johansen with the fourth overall pick in the 2010 draft. They opt for Jeff Skinner in this redo.
Skinner has been a consistent goal scorer throughout his NHL career, including the 37-goal season in 2016-2017. Jeff Skinner would have been a useful, team-oriented player for John Tortorella in Columbus.
#5 New York Islanders: Ryan Johansen (Columbus Blue Jackets)
With the fifth overall pick, the Islanders selected Nino Niederreiter in the actual 2010 draft. However, in this redo, they select Ryan Johansen.
Johansen has been a consistent point producer throughout his career and would have been a valuable addition to the Islanders' lineup. In the mid-2010s, Johansen was a force down the middle of the ice, and the Islanders have been looking for a game-breaking center for years.
#6 Tampa Bay Lightning: Cam Fowler (Anaheim Ducks)
The Lightning selected Brett Connolly with the sixth overall pick in the NHL 2010 class. However, in this redo, they selected Cam Fowler.
Fowler has become one of the league's top defensemen and would have been a valuable addition to the Lightning's blue line. Just imagine a top blue line pairing of Victor Hedman and Cam Fowler. Success for the Lightning might have come a lot earlier.
#7 Carolina Hurricanes: Charlie Coyle (San Jose Sharks)
The Hurricanes selected Jeff Skinner with the seventh overall pick in the actual 2010 class. However, in this redo, they opt for Charlie Coyle.
Coyle has been a consistent point producer throughout his career and would have been a valuable addition to the Hurricanes' lineup. Coyle could have found a groove earlier on in Carolina and developed into the top six center that he is today in a shorter time.
#8 Atlanta Thrashers: Justin Faulk (Carolina Hurricanes)
In the actual NHL 2010 class, the Thrashers selected Alexander Burmistrov with the eighth overall pick. However, in this redo, they select Justin Faulk.
Faulk has become one of the league's top defensemen and would have been a valuable addition to the Jets' blue line. In recent years, the Jets have been searching for a shutdown defender, and Faulk could have been that.
#9 Minnesota Wild: Mikael Granlund (Minnesota Wild)
The Wild selected Mikael Granlund with the ninth overall pick in the 2010 class. In this redo, they make the same selection.
Granlund has been a consistent point producer throughout his career and has become a valuable member of the Wild's lineup. And of course, Granlund ended up being traded for the Wild's second-best scorer in the last few years, Kevin Fiala.
#10 New York Rangers: Mark Stone (Ottawa Senators)
The league might have been quite different had Mark Stone not fallen to the sixth round and developed into a consistent top-six forward.
Stone has been a key piece in the Vegas Golden Knights' resurgence in the NHL. Who knows if Stone could have developed in the same way in New York that he did in Ottawa? If he did, he would be a star in the Big Apple.
