The Florida Panthers are a professional ice hockey team competing in the National Hockey League's (NHL) Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference. They initially played at Miami Arena before moving to Amerant Bank Arena in 1998. As the NHL's southernmost team, they serve the Greater Miami area and have had local broadcasting rights held by Bally Sports Florida since 1996. The Panthers are affiliated with the Charlotte Checkers (AHL) and the Florida Everblades (ECHL).
As of 2024, they have appeared in the Stanley Cup Finals twice, in 1996 (losing to the Colorado Avalanche) and in 2023 (losing to the Vegas Golden Knights). During the 1996-2020 period, the Panthers only made the playoffs five times without winning a series. This also included a notable 10-year absence from the playoffs between 2001-2011. However, a revival in form saw them win their first playoff series in more than two decades in 2022 and bettered this by reaching the Stanley Cup finals only for the second time in 2023.
Who is Florida Panthers Head Coach 2024?
According to the NHL, Paul Maurice serves as the head coach of the Florida Panthers as of 2024. He was named head coach on June 22, 2022, and brought over 25 seasons of NHL coaching experience with him.
Paul Maurice was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario and was drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers in the 12th round (252nd overall) of the 1985 NHL Draft while playing in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) for the Windsor Compuware Spitfires (presently the Windsor Spitfires). His OHL journey saw him play for four seasons before an eye injury derailed his playing career. He soon transitioned into coaching with the Spitfires before joining Detroit Jr. Red Wings of the OHL and leading them to an OHL championship in the 1994-95 season.
Maurice began his NHL head coaching career with the Hartford Whalers/Carolina Hurricanes during the 1995-96 season and continued to coach the team until 2003-04. He then left to join the Toronto Maple Leafs but returned for a second spell in 2008. In his entire time with the Hurricanes, he led them to the Stanley Cup Final in 2002 and the Eastern Conference Final in 2009.
Maurice then joined the Winnipeg Jets in the 2013-14 season and coached the team until the 2021-22 season. Under his leadership, the Jets reached the Western Conference Final in 2018. He left the Jets in December 2021 and was later appointed as the head coach of the Florida Panthers in June 2022. In his first season with the Panthers, he led the team to win the Prince of Wales Trophy and secured the franchise’s first victory (Game 3) in the Stanley Cup Finals. This also marked Maurice’s second appearance in the Stanley Cup Final as a coach.
