The NHL Trade Deadline is rapidly approaching, meaning the Anaheim Ducks will only have a few days to move some of their veterans. If the Ducks decide that some of their pending unrestricted free agents are not part of their future plans, the team may elect to move on from some of their veteran players.
"My latest piece, for @TheHockeyNews. The Ducks don't have a marquee name on the trade block, but they should still be quite active in the next six days." - Adam Proteau
It may come as a surprise that Anaheim Ducks GM Pat Verbeek has been relatively quiet on the trade market considering that the team sits last in the Pacific Division. While the club's 20-34-7 record places them near the bottom of the league, the team has enjoyed solid seasons from some of their young talents, including Trevor Zegras, Troy Terry and Mason McTavish.
Some of the players that the Anaheim Ducks may be trying to move have some form of no-movement protection in their contracts, which may be a reason why the team has not been as active.
However, if their no-movement clauses are overcome, John Klingberg, Kevin Shattenkirk and Nathan Beaulieu could be some intriguing defensive additions for Stanley Cup contenders looking for help.
John Klingberg may be on the move if the Anaheim Ducks decide to sell
John Klingberg has endured a rough season for the lowly Ducks, sitting at a dreadful -28 plus/minus. However, given a recent uptick in offensive production, the market for Klingberg may be expanding, as the veteran has posted four points in his past three games.
"Hearing #Avs kicking some tires on John Klingberg" - Adrian Dater
So far this season, the veteran has posted eight goals and 16 assists, however, last year he finished with an impressive six goals and 41 assists. Given his offensive history as a member of the Dallas Stars and the fact that he is a pending unrestricted free agent, Klingberg may be an intriguing piece for contenders.
Kevin Shattenkirk is another veteran defenseman potentially on the trade block
Similar to John Klingberg, Kevin Shattenkirk has gone through a down season with the Anaheim Ducks. Through 54 games this season, the 34-year-old has posted two goals and 15 assists to go along with a -14 plus/minus rating.
"I think the Ducks should trade Kevin Shattenkirk, but a bit of an unpopular opinion here: signing him to like a 1-2 year extension won’t be the worst idea. He’s a good bottom pairing option heading into next year" - Cj Woodling (Parody)
The difficulty with a trade involving Shattenkirk is the fact that his contract carries a 12-team no-trade clause. This means that Shattenkirk will have to give the Anaheim Ducks a list of teams that he will accept a trade to.
Nathan Beaulieu could be a cheap veteran for a contender
While Nathan Beaulieu may not be the sexiest name on the trade market, given his low salary, he could be a cheap addition for contenders looking for defensive help. Whether he becomes a depth piece or a bottom-pair defenseman for his new club, teams are always looking to add veteran depth for the postseason. His $850,000 expiring contract could make him even more enticing.
"So basically Chevy will make another move… Nathan Beaulieu. #NHLJets" - Noah LaForte
The Winnipeg Jets may be one of the teams looking at the veteran to bolster their defensive depth. The Edmonton Oilers may be another team that will look to add to their defense.
