Helen Maroulis: A Brief Biography
Helen Maroulis is an American female wrestler born on 19th September 1991. She hails from Huntington Beach in California, United States. Helen specializes in Freestyle wrestling and represents the USA in the 53 kg category.
Helen was born to John Maroulis and Paula Maroulis in Rockville, Maryland, and later moved to Huntington Beach, California, where she and her family reside. She began to take up an interest in wrestling while studying at Magruder High School, where she attended for three years before moving to Marquette Senior High School.
As a freshman at her previous high school, Helen won the wrestling championships at the Maryland State Wrestling Championships. After graduating from high school, she joined Missouri Baptist University, where she became a member of its wrestling team and later she transferred to Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, Canada.
Helen Maroulis got her major international breakthrough in 2011 when she won the Gold medal in the 55 kg Freestyle category at the Pan American Games. The following year, she won the Silver medal in the 55 kg at the World Wrestling Championships. She would go on to win two World titles (2015 and 2017) and a Bronze medal (2014).
In 2016, Helen made her Olympic debut at the Rio Olympics and clinched the Gold medal in the 53 kg Freestyle category. In March 2020, she booked her Olympic berth at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics after reaching the final of the 57 kg Freestyle at the Pan American Qualification Tournament.
