Under the umbrella of cycling as a sport, track cycling is most popular and is done on customized track bicycles on an oval track designed specifically for that purpose, known as a velodrome. Great Britain began using such tracks in the mid-19th century. All cycling events are overseen by the 1900-founded Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI).
The discipline of track cycling has always been on the Olympic schedule since it began in 1896, with the exception of the 1912 Summer Olympics. In 1988, women's events began taking place, and they further expanded with six more track events for women in 2000 and 2004. However, the sport underwent drastic changes in 2012. Along with the points race and Madison race, the then-popular individual pursuit race was also eliminated. To balance out events for men and women, they participate in six track events: omnium, Madison, keirin, team sprint, team pursuit, and sprint.
In the 20th century, France and Italy dominated the track cycling world, but at the beginning of the 21st century, Great Britain made a determined push to surpass their medal total, which they did, as they sit at the top of the medal table with countries that have ever won at least one medal.
Britain has a total of 78 medals, including 33 golds and out of the 79 medals, 23 are won by Bradley Wiggins (seven medals total; four golds), Chris Hoy (seven medals total; six golds), and Jason Kenny (nine medals total; seven golds).
