The Fédération internationale de natation (FINA), which oversees aquatic sports, lists diving as one of the five disciplines. The other four are marathon swimming, artistic swimming, swimming, and water polo.
The sport is somewhat modern and has been consistent at the Olympic Games since 1904. The 3-meter springboard, the 10-meter platform, and two-person synchronized diving competitions on platforms and springboards are the diving events that have been competed in by both men and women at the Olympics.
The American Greg Louganis has four golds and one silver to lead the men's gold medal score, while with eight medals and two golds, Russian Dmitry Sautin leads the medal table for men. Chinese athletes Wu Minxia and Chen Ruolin top the women's competition with five gold medals apiece. With seven medals, Minxia is the most decorated female diver of all time.
