Weightlifting has always been a form of entertainment to be seen at the fairs during the Middle Ages; however, by the late 19th century, it began to be recognized as a sport. It debuted at the first iteration of the Olympic Games in 1896 and has been consistently on the schedule from 1920 onwards.
The discipline is governed by the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF), though in the past, it had a few other organizations to look after and went through a few name changes as well. Before 1972, the IWF was known as the Fédération Haltérophile Internationale (FHI), which was founded in 1920.
Another detail worth mentioning is that there were also one-handed lifts in the 1896 and 1904 Olympic iterations since it did not have weight classes and was an open competition. The concept of weight classes grew in recent years with the inclusion of women's events at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
