FX’s Snowfall season 7 will not likely happen and has ended after six seasons, leaving fans longing for more. The network had renewed the highly-rated crime drama for a sixth and final season a year ago, with an emotional conclusion of the 1980s drug kingpin Franklin Saint’s (Damson Idris) story.

The finale storyline had been in the works for years, with showrunner Dave Andron pitching Seasons 5 and 6 to FX in 2021. This foresight allowed for a well-planned and impactful conclusion to the series. Andron explained to The Hollywood Reporter in April 2022:

"We wanted to have an endgame in mind, so we sat down and had some creative conversations with some folks on our side, and we decided six seasons would do it and was what we needed to finish telling the story."

This clear vision for the series' arc meant that Snowfall could wrap up on its terms, providing a satisfying and thoughtful end to Franklin Saint’s journey.

Why there won't be a Snowfall season 7?

The decision not to proceed with Snowfall season 7 did not occur due to sudden cancellation or low ratings. Instead, it was a tactical and creative choice made by the show's creators and the FX network to bring the narrative line toward its logical conclusion.

By ending the series at its peak, creators were able to avoid wearing out their welcome or watering down their effect, hence Snowfall season 7 did not take off. This approach ensured that all the loose ends were tied up properly and every character was able to develop and realize their pre-determined destiny.

Through meticulous planning from showrunner Dave Andron, Snowfall came up with a powerful ending, just like it did in the previous seasons.

What happened in Snowfall season 6?

One must look back at the series' history to understand why Snowfall season 7 won't happen. The crime drama premiered in 2017 and quickly became one of FX's top-watched programs.

Throughout the show, Franklin's journey from a young man trying to make a living to a powerful drug lord running a multi-million dollar empire captivated audiences. However, the finale showcased his ultimate downfall. Franklin's mother, Cissy, ended up in prison after killing Teddy. Following a confrontation with Veronique, Franklin learned she had taken most of his remaining money and left to raise their child in another country. This series of events left Franklin desperate and alone.

In the final moments, Franklin's circumstances mirrored those of his beginning, highlighting a tragic full circle. Showrunner Dave Andron told TVLine that Franklin's situation "breaks him" as he exhausts his last bit of cash.

"He fully breaks, and he gives up. After saying that he’s never going to do it, he just can’t," Andron explained.
"He can’t take it all in and cope with it, ending with that guy broken on the street that we started on very much felt like the surprising and yet inevitable end to our show."

Throughout the series, Franklin struggles with addiction, relationships, and power dynamics, showing his relentless drive and ambition. In the finale, his desperate attempts to recover from a $37 million loss led him to beg and threaten friends and family for money, illustrating how far he had fallen.

The finale also highlighted the poignant relationship between Leon and Cissy. Despite Cissy's drastic actions, Leon understood and respected her decision, refusing to give Franklin any money when demanded. Their love and mutual respect were evident when Leon visited Cissy in jail, showcasing a heartfelt bond.

The legacy of Snowfall

Snowfall season 7's cancellation did not affect the series' impact. In terms of ratings on the FX network, this is considered their third most popular TV show ever based on the true crime genre.

It has been considered an excellent crime-drama television series due to its exploration of socio-political dynamics that characterized America during the Reagan era. The complexity of the drug trade and the individual turmoil faced by each character involved resulted in a multi-layered story that engrossed viewers.

Snowfall season 7 did not come to fruition, but a spinoff series of the same is expected. Deadline announced in March 2023 that a spinoff series about the character Wanda (played by Gail Bean) is being developed at FX.

The potential offshoot will be set in the 1990s, depicting South-Central as it moves from crack to gangster rap. This continuation will provide fresh stories while maintaining the characters established throughout the original series.

Although fans might feel cheated out of Snowfall season 7, the decision to end it was calculated, and well-thought-out, and it was aimed at ensuring that its conclusion had impact and coherence.
