The 6-foot-9 center, Brittney Griner plays for the Atlanta Dream. Before signing 1 year contract with the Dream in January 2025, Griner played her 11 seasons WNBA career with the Phoenix Mercury after getting drafted as first overall pick in the 2013 WNBA Draft by them. Her dominant WNBA career, averagin 17.7 points, 7. rebounds and 2.6 blocks is the reason why she earned a spot on the WNBA 25th Anniversary Team in 2021. Griner is a 10-time WNBA All-Star (2013–2015, 2017–2019, 2021–2024) and a two-time WNBA scoring champion (2017, 2019). Known for her defensive prowess, she won WNBA Defensive Player of the Year twice (2014, 2015), was on the All-Defensive First Team three times, and the Second Team four times.

With her 7-foot-1 wingspan, Griner is arguably the greatest shot-blocker in WNBA history. She led the league in blocks eight times (2013–2019, 2021) and, by the end of the 2024 season, has totaled 812 career blocks, ranking third all-time. Averaging 2.6 blocks per game, she is on pace to become the league's all-time leader in blocks. Griner took part in her third Olympics with Team USA at the 2024 Paris Olympics and won her third consecutive Olympic gold medal, playing alongside her Mercury teammates, Diana Taurasi and Kahleah Copper. Griner's consistent dominance cements her legacy as one of the best defenders in WNBA history.

Brittney Griner College

Brittney Griner played college basketball for Baylor University in the Big 12 conference from 2009 to 2013. During her junior year (2011-12), Griner led the Bears to an invincible 40-0 season (the only undefeated season in their history). She also won the regular season championship, conference tournament, and the NCAA tournament in her junior year, averaging 23.2 points, 9.5 rebounds and 5.2 blocks per game.

Brittney Griner ended her career as the leading scorer in Baylor’s history, second in rebounds, first in minutes played, and second in games played. She was only four rebounds short and one game short to take the first position. The Baylor center blocked the most shots in the NCAA women’s college history (748), amassing a lead of more than 90 from the second position. The prolific scorer is ranked sixth in NCAA women’s college history for most points scored, becoming one of few to amass over 3000 points in their career.

After accumulating historical numbers in her career, Griner also won several Player of the Year awards. The Baylor center was also two-time National Player of the Year (2012 and 2013). She was also a four-time Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, one of few to win four consecutive Defensive Player of the Year awards.

Brittney Griner High School

Brittney Griner played for Nimitz High School in Houston, Texas. She had one of the most dominating high school careers in the 21st century. Known for her dunks and shot-blocking, Griner set multiple records in both those categories. She set a single-game record of seven dunks against Aldine High School and averaged 5.9 blocks per game during her junior year. Her video of dunking during high school games went viral which led to a meeting with Shaquille O’Neal.

In her senior year, she led the Nimitz Cougars to a state championship final and averaged 7.7 blocks per game breaking many records. She was also named the WBCA High School Player of the Year (2009) and played in the 2009 WBCA High School All-American game.
