Brittney Sykes was born on February 7, 1994, in Newark, New Jersey, U.S. As of August 2024, she plays as a point guard for the Washington Mystics having signed a three-year contract worth $575,000 on Feb 01, 2023. Sykes debuted in the WNBA when the Atlanta Dream selected her as their seventh overall pick in the 2017 WNBA Draft. She was awarded the WNBA Steals Leader in 2021 and 2022.

Sykes was honored with a spot on the WNBA All-Defensive First Team in 2021 and 2023, the WNBA All-Defensive Second Team in 2020 and 2022, and the WNBA All-Rookie Team in 2017. Sykes is ranked third in school history with 670 field goals and 1,846 points. Sykes is fourth in Syracuse history for career free throws with 409 and fifth in school history with 266 steals. She is eighth in program history with 810 career rebounds and ninth in Orange history with an average of 1.9 career steals per game. At the University High School of Humanities in Newark, New Jersey, Brittney Sykes played for four years under the coaching of Felicia M. Oliver. She was a four-star recruit and the espnW HoopGurlz ranked her as the 31st best player in the class of 2012. She was selected for the 2012 United States Under 18 National Team and the 2012 McDonald’s All-American, as per her Syracuse University profile.

In high school, she was the North-South Game MVP. She also led the University to the Essex County Championship in 2011-12.
