Born on August 28, 1994, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Kahleah Copper plays for Phoenix Mercury in the WNBA. She was drafted as the seventh overall pick by the Washington Mystics in the 2016 WNBA Draft. Before playing in the WNBA, Kahleah Copper played For two High schools. First at Prep Charter High School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and then at Girard College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Then Copper played college basketball at Rutgers University, winning the 2014 WNIT MVP.
During her tenure with the Sky, Copper was a key piece in the 2021 championship team filled with veteran players like Candace Parker, Courtney Vandersloot, and Allie Quigley. During the playoffs, Copper averaged 17.7 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 1.2 steals, shooting an efficient 52% from the field and leading the Sky to their maiden WNBA championship. She was also named the 2021 WNBA Finals MVP. The four-time All-Star has been traded twice in her career, first from the Washington Mystics to the Chicago Sky in 2018 and then to the Phoenix Mercury from the Chicago Sky before the 2024 season. Kahleah Copper played college basketball at Rutgers University also known as “Rutgers Scarlet Knights” from 2013 to 2016. She played in multiple conferences throughout her college career at the Scarlet Knights.
In her freshman year at Rutgers in the Big East conference, she averaged 5.1 points, 3.5 rebounds, 0.5 assists, and 0.4 steals per game. She only started five games and played off the bench due to the availability of senior guards on the roster. Despite playing off the bench, she earned a place on the Big East All-Freshman team.
In her sophomore year (2013-14) in the AAC conference, she was inserted into the starting lineup and made 36 appearances. A significant improvement in minutes played increased in numbers as Copper averaged 16.1 points, 6.2 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 1.1 steals per game. The Rutgers guard made the first-team All-AAC and led Rutgers to the WNIT Championship. In the finals against the UTEP Miners, Copper recorded 18 points and 12 rebounds, shooting 46.7% from the field. She was named the WNIT MVP (2014).
In her junior year (2014-15) in the Big Ten conference, she averaged 16.3 points, 5.2 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 1.2 steals per game. She made her first appearance at the NCAA tournament in her junior year and led the Scarlet Knights to a victory against Seton Hall in the first round. She recorded 21 points, eight rebounds, and one steal, shooting 58.3% from the field. The journey was cut short in the second round by the number one seed UConn.
In her senior year (2015-16), Copper averaged 17.7 points, 8.0 rebounds, 1.7 assists, and 1.6 steals per game. She scored 1879 points in her career and finished as the third-highest scorer in Rutgers’ women's basketball history. Her rebounding skills were impeccable and she is ranked fifth in total rebounds in Rutgers’ history. Her ability to get to the rim, combined with her rebounding instincts, made her the leader in free-throw attempts during her tenure at the university.
