Kelsey Plum is an American professional basketball player, currently playing for the Las Vegas Aces of the WNBA. Born in Poway, California, Plum comes from a family of accomplished athletes. Her mother played volleyball for the University of California, Davis while her father is an All-American high school football player for La Mesa. This gave Plum the necessary background and motivation to pursue sports, more specifically basketball as a career.
Plum had an exceptional high school career, averaging 19.9 points for the whole tenure of her career while scoring a total of 2,247 points. Plum was also named an All-American in 2013 and also named Ms. Basketball by CaliHiSports, an award given to the best women’s high school basketball player in California. In her four years at La Jolla Country Day, her team had a record of 103-22.
Plum was a consensus five-star recruit and had a plethora of colleges to choose from but she ended up choosing the University of Washington. Plum made an immediate impact and instantly became one of the greatest D1 college basketball players ever. She averaged 20.9 points per game in her freshman season and it is regarded as one of the greatest freshman seasons ever.
She continued the stellar performances throughout her college career averaging 22.6 points in her sophomore season, 25.9 points in her junior season, and 31.7 points in her senior season. She finished her college with 3,397 points, breaking the NCAA points record previously held by Lisa Leslie. She was also named the Naismith College Player of the Year in 2017.
Following this, Plum declared to the NBA draft where she was selected by the San Antonio Stars, who were later renamed the Las Vegas Aces as the number one overall pick.
