Kamilla Cardoso did not mince her words after the Chicago Sky's blowout loss to the Washington Mystics on Wednesday. The Sky played without Angel Reese for the second time following her season-ending wrist injury. They passed the first one with flying colors before dropping face-first in an equally important game.
Cardoso expressed her disappointment after the Sky were clobbered by the Mystics 89-58 at Wintrust Arena. They were already down by 16 points in the first quarter and never recovered. It was a rough loss considering Chicago is barely clinging to the No. 8 spot with four games left in the regular season.
Speaking to reporters after the game, the No. 3 overall pick in this year's draft was short and blunt in describing their performance versus Washington:
"This was embarrassing," she said.
Chicago tried fighting back in the second quarter but was not getting any stops. The Washington Mystics then pulled away in the third quarter as the Sky seemingly gave up, scoring a total of 19 points in the second half.
Chennedy Carter had a team-high 16 points with two rebounds and one assist, while Kamilla Cardoso put up 13 points, eight rebounds and three assists. It was a disappointing performance from the Sky since they were coming off an impressive 92-77 over the Dallas Wings on Sunday.
Sunday's game was their first without Ange Reese, who announced late last week that she'll miss the remainder of the season with a wrist injury. She underwent surgery on Tuesday, which was successful. She has been the most important player for Chicago and her historic rookie campaign ended on a sour note.
Nevertheless, the Sky will need to use Reese's absence as an inspiration to maintain their place in the WNBA standings. They will now need to win all of their last four games if they want to make the playoffs.
Kamilla Cardoso will need to step in for Angel Reese as Sky aims for playoff spot
According to the Chicago Tribune's Julia Poe, the game plan for the Chicago Sky in their game against the LA Sparks was to feed the ball to Kamilla Cardoso. The Sky did a good job of doing that early in the game but then went rogue and barely got Cardoso going.
Poe pointed out how Cardoso worked on her post offense during the 2024 Paris Olympics break but barely had any chances. She's averaging the second-lowest attempts among centers in the WNBA, which is concerning given how good the rookie can be when given the opportunity.
Angel Reese even praised Cardoso for working on her game and gaining more confidence as the season went on. The Brazilian star got off to a slow start due to an injury in preseason. The Sky will need to get her going to have a chance at making the playoffs.
Chicago will need to win all four of their remaining regular season games to secure their place in the playoffs. Cardoso and Co. travel to face the Minnesota Lynx next at Target Center on Friday.
