After the 2024 WNBA season ended, there was talk about NaLyssa Smith parting ways with the Indiana Fever. After Smith made some interesting moves on her social media accounts, fans began to wonder whether she'd still be playing alongside Caitlin Clark in 2025.
Though her future in Indiana is clouded with uncertainty for now, one thing is for sure: Smith will be joining the team of her significant other, Dijonai Carrington, in the new 3x3 league, Unrivaled. On Jan. 25, the league officially announced Smith's signing in an Instagram post:
"Mist BC has signed free-agent forward NaLyssa Smith to a relief player contract," read the collaborative post by Unrivaled and Mist BC.
Because Smith is essentially taking Carrington's spot as the latter recuperates from injury, it remains to be seen whether the two will play together for Mist BC in future Unrivaled games.
That didn't stop fans from expressing their delight at the "reunion" of the two former Baylor stalwarts, who have been dating since Carrington joined the Bears in the 2020-21 NCAA season.
"Getting your gf a contract >>>> I love DiJonai and NaLyssa," said one netizen.
"we love when the lovers link back up to hoop together," said another.
"I need to see Nai & Lyss on the court immediately," demanded another netizen.
Perhaps to the delight of Unrivaled co-founders Napheesa Collier and Breanna Stewart, other online users said that they'd be tuning in to the league because of Smith and Carrington ending up on the same team:
"Ummm okay bc I didn’t need ANOTHER reason to watch but here it is!!!!" commented one online user.
"Ahhhh! Unrivaled just keeps getting better!" said another online user.
NaLyssa Smith expresses surprise at signing with Unrivaled team
While fans were ecstatic to learn about Smith joining Mist BC, Smith herself appeared to have been taken by surprise. About an hour after news of her signing broke, the 6-foot-4 forward Tweeted this:
"literally what happen," Smith said in response to a fan talking about the signing. "i was on vacation."
Smith will have to get over her shock pretty soon as she has been officially enlisted by Mist BC to compete in Unrivaled.
