Dallas Wings star Satou Sabally will join Phantom BC in their Saturday matchup against the Laces, marking the inaugural game for both teams in the new 3x3 league "Unrivaled." Co-founded by Minnesota Lynx's Napheesa Collier and New York Liberty's Breanna Stewart, this league is set to make waves.
Since being drafted as the second overall pick in the 2020 WNBA Draft, Sabally has been a consistent performer and earned two All-Star appearances. However, the 2024 WNBA season was challenging for her, with only 15 appearances due to a shoulder injury.
The German international has fully recovered since and appears to be in excellent shape as she prepares to make an impact in the new league. She hopes to start against the Laces on Saturday as the historic tournament continues into its second day. On day one, Napheesa Collier's Lunar Owls defeated the Mist, and Vinyl BC edged out Rose BC by six points.
Satou Sabally decides on Dallas Mystics' future as Phantom teammate offers a resolution
Dallas Mystics star Satou Sabally made headlines during her media day duties with Phantom BC on Jan. 9 by discussing her future with the Dallas Wings. Drafted by the team in 2020, Satou announced her intention to leave the franchise after five seasons together.
Although her final salary of $195,000 is protected by the Wings, hopes to trade her rather than lose her for free. Phantom BC teammate and Connecticut Sun star Natasha Cloud offered a resolution for Sabally's future in the WNBA on Thursday:
"At the end of the day I’m very much a person that whatever is best for Satou moving forward, that’s what I want for Satou moving forward," she said. "If that is Phoenix, I will literally tell her I will give up my apartment if she wants that too."
Despite the uncertainty surrounding her WNBA future, Sabally is currently focused on her duties with Phantom BC as she and her teammates aim to make history. Sabally and Cloud have been paired with Sabrina Ionescu, Marina Mabrey, Katie Lou Samuelson and Britney Griner. Former Brooklyn Nets assistant coach Adam Harrington will be the head coach for the team during their first season.
