Sabrina Ionescu rubbed many fans the wrong way with her celebration against Belgium during the USA Basketball women's 87-74 win on Thursday. The WNBA star guard had a discreet game, only scoring six points.
Even so, she still found a way to make the rounds on social media. Ionescu hit Kobe Bryant's "silencer" celebration during the game, a moment captured on camera. The New York Liberty playmaker and A'ja Wilson were featured in the picture, which was deemed "TOO COLD" by ClutchPoints.
Plenty of fans had something to say about this, and they weren't positive. The majority called Ionescu out for using the celebration while she didn't have that impact on the game.
The celebration came after she made a 3-pointer with game time running out, which prompted one fan to say she should quiet the crowd.
"Wdym as you should? You’re up 10 points against Belgium, just unsportsmanlike," one fan responded to that comment.
"Ans shushing is such a childish response, just celebrate your win like a professional and focus on your next game," the same fan added.
More people went after her for trying to become the main character after struggling during the entire game.
"She had 6 points and played hesitant the whole game," one fan wrote.
"What a b***h lmao. Pretends to run down the clock just to take a shot because she’s been useless all game," another fan said.
One fan brought Jayson Tatum to the conversation, saying people would've reacted differently if he did what Sabrina did.
Another fan said Ionescu and the rest of the team need to play better if they want to pull away from opponents earlier in games.
How has Sabrina Ionescu performed in first two Olympic games?
Sabrina Ionescu is playing in her first Olympic basketball tournament, having ups and downs during the first two games.
Ionescu had a solid start to her Olympic journey with 11 points, three rebounds and five assists on Monday in a 102-76 win over Japan.
On Thursday, however, she wasn't relevant to the win, scoring six points, grabbing three rebounds and assisting teammates four times. She shot 2-for-5 from the field, 1-for-2 from beyond the arc and 1-for-1 from the free-throw line.
A'ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart are playing at a high level, leading Team USA past Japan and Belgium. If they keep this level of performance, Team USA would be fine, but against more dangerous teams, other players should show up, Sabrina Ionescu included.
