Alyssa Thomas is one of the biggest names in the 2025 WNBA free agency. Her girlfriend DeWanna Bonner is also out of contract and will join her in seeking a new team next season. One analyst predicted that the couple would likely move on from the Connecticut Sun and could be signed as a package deal.
Speaking to NBC Sports' "On Her Turf" ahead of Unrivaled's inaugural season, Thomas remained mum about her plans for free agency. She is focused on preparing for the new 3-on-3 league that will begin play on Jan. 17 in Florida.
Natalie Esquire and Terrika Foster-Brasby predicted that Thomas would be leaving Connecticut. Foster-Brasby went further and projected that Bonner might join her wherever she signs this offseason.
"Alyssa Thomas is the kind of player that you hate to have to play against, but you absolutely want on your team," Foster-Brasbey said. "You don't want to let her go for nothing."
"I also think it's fair that I think most of us assume that DeWanna and Alyssa are going to be a package deal. ... You also have to consider what's going to be best personally for the family, for things of that nature, and so it's a very complicated situation."
From 5:40 onwards:
Alyssa Thomas and DeWanna Bonner have been teammates since 2020 and have been engaged since July 2023. Thomas has spent her entire career with the Connecticut Sun, starting when she was taken fourth in the 2014 WNBA draft.
Bonner, meanwhile, was with the Phoenix Mercury from 2009 to 2019 before getting traded to the Sun in 2020. She's already 37 years old but still played at a high level in 2024, even getting an All-Star nod.
If the prediction is true, Thomas and Bonner would be a great combo addition for any team with the money to sign them. Thomas is an all-around player, mostly known for her playmaking, while Bonner is a legitimate scorer and ranks fourth on the WNBA’s all-time scoring list.
Alyssa Thomas to play for Laces BC in Unrivaled
Alyssa Thomas had another fantastic year for the Connecticut Sun, leading them to the playoffs and finishing fifth in WNBA MVP voting. She was named an All-Star and made her Olympic debut for Team USA, winning a gold medal in Paris.
The five-time All-Star is also entering free agency for the first time in her career, while not taking her talents overseas. After years of playing in South Korea, Cyprus, Czechia and China, she is staying at home this offseason and has signed to play for Unrivaled.
Thomas was drafted by Laces BC and will play under coach Andrew Wade. Her teammates include Jackie Young, Tiffany Hayes, Kayla McBride, Kate Martin and Stefanie Dolson.
