Shakira Austin is a basketball player for the Washington Mystics in the WNBA. She is 6 feet 5 inches tall, plays as a Center and is well-recognized for her defensive style of play and rebounding. Austin started her college career at the University of Maryland and was selected for the Big Ten All-Freshman Team. She played for Maryland for two seasons before transferring to Ole Miss where she was also successful, being named to the First-team All-SEC twice and winning the Gillom Trophy in 2021 and 2022. Her college performance was characterized by her physical strength, especially in the paint both in offense and defense and she ended her college career with an average of 13.3 points, 8.6 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game.

Austin was drafted third overall in the 2022 WNBA Draft by the Washington Mystics. She was able to quickly become a valuable asset to the team and in her first season, she was selected to the WNBA All-Rookie Team. Austin has also played professionally abroad where she played for Elitzur Ramla, won the Israeli Championship and was awarded the league’s MVP in 2023.
