Caitlin Clark set a new WNBA record on Wednesday night for most assists in a single game, as she dished out 19. Clark continues to exceed expectations this season, demonstrating that she is indeed a generational talent.
Following her notable performance against the Dallas Wings, Clark is closer to breaking even more WNBA records. Vanshay Murdock, a FOX 9 photojournalist and WNBA enthusiast, shared two graphics from ESPN, including another record Clark broke on the same night.
The 915 points she has scored or assisted on are already the most by a rookie in WNBA history, surpassing Breanna Stewart, who totaled 900 points in 2016.
Moreover, the second graphic shows that Clark is on pace to finish the season with 684 total points, which would be the second-most by a rookie in league history. She could also finish the season with 327 assists — the most by any WNBA player ever in a single campaign.
The 22-year-old is currently on track for 109 3-pointers made, which would be the most ever by a first-year player, and could become the first WNBA rookie to average 15 points, five assists, and five rebounds in a season.
Who did Caitlin Clark surpass to break the WNBA single-game assists record?
Caitlin Clark recorded a double-double against the Dallas Wings on Wednesday, dropping 24 points and a whopping 19 assists. Despite losing the game, Clark made history by breaking the WNBA's single-game record which has stood for four years.
Clark surpassed Courtney Vandersloot, who recorded 18 assists against the Indiana Fever in 2020. Now at third on the list is Sabrina Ionescu who had 16 in 2022 against the Phoenix Mercury. Natasha Cloud comes in at fourth with 15 assists in a game last season against the Atlanta Dream, and earlier this campaign, Alyssa Thomas recorded 14 assists versus the Minnesota Lynx, good for fifth all-time.
The Indiana Fever missed a chance to get closer to the .500 mark after the 101-93 loss to the Wings, but the good news for them is they are still in seventh place in the standings.
Caitlin Clark finished the first part of the 2024 WNBA season averaging 17.1 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 8.2 assists per game. She's shooting 40.5% from the field, 32.7% from deep and 89.1% from the free-throw line. She has already been named an All-Star and is a strong candidate to take the ROY award at the end of the campaign.
