A lot has been said about the progress that has been made by the female wrestler of WWE in the last couple of years. Women have gone from just being featured for their sex appeal to being seen as legitimate wrestlers.
The WWE has now had a female only PPV in Evolution, a Female Money in the Bank, Females headlining PPVs at Tables, Ladders and Chairs as well as Hell in the Cell. The female Superstars of the WWE are now amongst the hottest talents in the company, and there are rumors that Becky Lynch, Charlotte Flair and Ronda Rousey will headline Wrestlemania, the first time the main event of the WWE's biggest PPV will be a women's title match.
Wrestlemania is one of the last bastions that the Women's revolution has not conquered and it would be an incredible accomplishment for the current roster to participate in the Main Event of Wrestlemania. After that, the only thing will be for female talent to headline a Hall of Fame class.
Unfortunately for the WWE, most of their deserving talent has already been inducted into the Hall of Fame, in the classes of bigger headline names. Superstars like Lita, Trish Stratus, the Fabulous Moolah, The Sensational Sherri, Mae Young, Wendi Richter, Sunny, Alundra Blayze, Ivory, Jacqueline, and Beth Phoenix have already been inducted into the hall of fame.
That covers their female talent from Mae Young and the Fabulous Moolah, who wrestled in the 50s and 60s, to the latest wrestlers of the post Attitude Era of Trish Stratus, Lita and Beth Phoenix. Meaning that most of the women that could be considered as headline level talent for a Hall of Fame class have already been inducted, while the current roster has several talented females that could headline a Hall of Fame are still currently active as full-time performers and wouldn't be eligible for induction into the Hall of Fame.
#5. AJ Lee
AJ Lee was one of the most talented wrestlers in the WWE during her time, and she stood head and shoulders above many of the other women in the division at the time, both in terms of in-ring talent and character.
AJ was in the WWE at a time when women were still seen as eye-candy, valets and the occasional match to fill space, usually multi-participant tag matches. However, in terms of talent, AJ would be well placed amongst the female revolution that has taken the current WWE women's roster by storm.
AJ had three reigns with the Diva's championships, defeating Kaitlyn for the title and feuding with the likes of the Bella twins and Paige. AJ's initial run with the belt saw her reign for 295 days, the longest reign at the time. She would drop the belt to a debuting Paige, the Monday Night Raw after Wrestlemania XXX after retaining the belt the previous night. AJ Lee and Paige would swap the belt before AJ Lee would lose the belt to Nikki Bella.
Outside of the ring, Lee's character work was quite good, but it was her skills on the microphone that made her stand out, dishing out the harshest of burns, including calling the women's division "cheap, interchangeable, expendable, useless women" and eviscerated the Bella twins by saying "talent isn't a sexually transmitted disease", in reference to Brie and Nikki's high profile relationship with wrestlers.
However, AJ Lee is married to controversial wrestler CM Punk and despite being highly talented and popular with wrestling fans. While rumors claimed that Vince had reached out to AJ Lee before Evolution, she nevertheless did not make an appearance and is just as unlikely as CM Punk is to return to the company.
If she was to return to the WWE, she would be deserving of her spot in the Hall of Fame and being the first woman to headline could be the enticement to lure her back.
#4. Paige
Paige's story is almost comical in how tragic it has been, raised as the youngest child of British Wrestlers and promoters, the Bevis family. Paige was a part of the WWE developmental program when it transitioned from Florida Championship Wrestling to the new NXT format.
In the tournament to crown the first ever NXT Women's champion, Paige would defeat Tamina, Alicia Fox, and Emma on her way to winning the title. Paige would defend her title against Summer Rae, Natalya, and Emma before she was stripped of the title when she moved to the main roster and defeated AJ Lee for the Diva's title.
From there Paige would go on to feud with the Bella twins and was joined by Charlotte and Becky from NXT to form the stable known as PCB. After Charlotte won the Diva's title though, Paige would turn on her and attempt to win back the Diva's title.
Unfortunately, this feud would end with Paige being forced to take time off to recover from an injury. After that, Paige would go back and forth between injuries and suspensions for the remainder of her time. Finally succumbing to her injuries, Paige retired at the Monday Night Raw after Wrestlemania 34.
She would then be announced as the Smackdown GM the next night and transition seamlessly into an authority figure. While the role has since been removed, Paige has been involved in the production and promotion of the movie "Fighting With My Family" based on Paige's family and her journey from the UK to the WWE.
Now that the movie has been released, it remains to be seen what Paige's role in the company will be. One thing is for sure, the WWE can give her a spot in the Hall of Fame considering her role in the Women's Revolution that began the process of transitioning from the diva's division to the Women's division of today.
#3. The Bella Twins
The Bella Twins have been a part of WWE programming for over 10 years, after getting their start at the WWE's developmental Florida Championship Wrestling promotion. Brie would debut first, with a match against Victoria in August of 2008.
During the match, Brie would go under the ring only for Nikki to emerge and pick up the victory. The storyline continued to reveal that Brie and Nikki were twins that would change places in order to get an advantage over their opponent.
The two had three reigns as the Diva's title, with Nikki holding the belt twice and Brie having just the won reign. While Brie's sole reign lasted over 2 months, Nikki's second run was the most significant reign.
While Nikki's first reign lasted only 6 days after Brie lost the belt when the twins tried to switch places during a match with Layla. Nikki's second run came when she defeated AJ Lee for the title, ending Lee's third and final title reign with the company. Nikki would hold the belt for 300 days, making it the longest single reign with the Diva's title, overtaking AJ Lee. Nikki would eventually lose the title to Charlotte Flair at Night of Champions 2015.
Brie and Nikki would spend significant time out of the ring, Nikki due to injury and Brie as she wanted to focus on having a family with husband and fellow WWE wrestler, Daniel Bryan. While both have since returned to the ring, both have significantly reduced their in-ring roles. Both wrestled at the first ever Women's Royal Rumble match, with Nikki eliminating Brie before she was eliminated by the winner, Asuka.
The Bellas have also been pioneers for the female members of the roster outside of the ring, contributing to the Total Diva's show as well as having their own spin-off of the series with Total Bellas.
#2. Chyna
Chyna's story in the WWF is mostly a story of what could have been, she was the first wrestler to win a non-female title, and competed against men and was taken as a legitimate threat when many in the women's division were not taken seriously.
Chyna's legacy as a wrestler is undeniable, becoming the first female to participate in a Royal Rumble as well as the first female to hold the Intercontinental Championship. She also had memorable feuds with Chris Jericho, Eddie Guerrero, and Jeff Jarrett. She was also a part of the incredibly popular D Generation X stable with Triple H and Shawn Michaels.
However, Chyna's exit from the WWF and post WWF career have kept her out of the Hall of Fame, and even now that she has tragically passed away after an overdose. Her post-wrestling career was well documented whether it be through her publicized struggles with addiction or her adult film career and troubled relationship with her former boyfriend and current Executive Vice President of Talent Relations for the WWE Triple H.
While a Hall of Fame induction was unlikely during her life, especially while she was struggling with drugs and alcohol, her image may be rehabilitated by the WWE now that she has passed away and a celebration of her wrestling achievements can focus on her achievements alone and not her erratic behavior.
Chyna would be an ideal candidate to be the first female to headline a Hall of Fame class, especially as she broke so many barriers for females in the WWE as a wrestler, it would be fitting for her to become the first woman to achieve this as well.
Now that Chyna has been announced in the Hall of Fame as a part of DX, this may pave the way for her to be inducted into the Hall of Fame as an individual.
#1. Sable
The WWE loves using the Hall of Fame to welcome back former talent, and amongst all the former WWE stars that they would love to have back, Sable would be somewhere amongst the top of their list. Sable initially joined the promotion alongside her then-husband, Marc Mero. While Sable initially appeared on WWF tv as Hunter Hearst Helmsley's valet at Wrestlemania 12. She would then manage her husband before the two would enter into a feud as Sable's popularity rose in the WWF.
While Sable was limited talent wise in regards to in-ring wrestling talent, she still won the Women's title at Survivor Series 1998, defeating former champion Jacqueline. Sable would hold the belt for several months before losing it controversially to Debra.
While Sable would beat Debra in an evening gown match, the Commissioner Shawn Michaels awarded Debra the title as her dress had come off. After losing the title, she would become the first WWF wrestler to pose for Playboy magazine.
Following her first exit from the company, Sable sued the WWF claiming that she was sexually harassed during her time at the promotion and worked in unsafe conditions. The WWF counter-sued Sable over the trademark to the name, and the two parties settled out of court. Sable would make appearances at WCW's Nitro program after her exit as a member of the audience as well as serving as the on-air CEO of the Xcitement Wrestling Federation.
Sable would then return to the WWF in 2003, feuding with Torrie Wilson after Wilson appeared in Playboy magazine. Sable would then transition to a feud with Stephanie McMahon as Sable was positioned as Vince McMahon's mistress.
She would wrestle with the company until August 2004, At the same time, she divorced her husband Marc Mero and began dating Brock Lesnar. Lesnar has since stated that Sable isn't interested in returning to Wrestling, as she prefers to spend time with her family instead.
Given the working relationship between the WWE and Brock Lesnar, it seems to make sense that Sable is also brought back into the fold to be inducted into WWE Hall of Fame as a headliner.
