The Uzumaki anime series will premiere on Adult Swim on September 29, 2024.

Junji Ito’s manga, Uzumaki is a psychological horror series. The story revolves around a high school student, Kirie Goshima, her boyfriend Suichi Saito, and the residents of Kurouzu-cho, a fictional town in Japan. The town is plagued by a mysterious thing, a spiral, which is known to affect the people inside the town. People either grow obsessed or begin to resent the effects of the spiral.

Uzumaki will debut on September 29, 2024. After its debut on Adult Swim, the series will be streaming on MAX the following day. Studio Drive is the show's animator, and Production I.G USA and Williams Street, Adult Swim's internal production division, are the co-producers.

How long will the Uzumaki anime be?

Uzumaki will have only 4 episodes which will cover the entire 20 chapters of the manga. The anime series was announced during the Crunchyroll Expo of 2019. However, the delay was caused due to the events of Covid-19. Subsequently, there were further delays for other reasons until the trailer release confirmed the anime release date. Here is the trailer for the anime series:

The Uzumaki anime is faithfully created fully in black and white following the exact features of its manga. Creative Director DeMarco said, “Our goal was to get as close as possible to something truly unsettling, something Ito-sensei does in much of his work but we had not felt in previous animated adaptations.”

The concept of spiral in Uzumaki

Ito was inspired to use a spiral design to achieve the needed length when he was writing a story about individuals who lived in an extremely long terraced house, which is how the story for Uzumaki came to be. The horror of Uzumaki, according to Ito, works because it challenges symbols that are promoted positively in Japanese culture and has a theme of protagonists fighting against an enigmatic power greater than themselves.

The ending of Uzumaki

Kirie and Suichi's failed attempts to escape the deteriorating town of Kurouzu-cho lead them towards the center of the town which seems to have an underway spiral staircase towards the bottom that seems to have been constructed centuries ago.

They descend to a pit in the middle, where they find Kirie's parents' bodies and an old city encased in spiral designs. Kirie answers that she lacks the strength and would like to stay with him when Shuichi pushes her to go forward and figure out how to break the curse.

The curse causes their bodies to twist and wrap around one another, giving each other an embrace. As they lay there together, Kirie observes that the curse ended at the same moment it started, concluding that it is endless and that everything will happen again when a new Kurouzu-cho is constructed in the spot where the old one was.
