The Roberto Clemente Award is one of the most important awards in Major League Baseball (MLB). This award is generally presented to those baseball players who are notable for their sportsmanship, contributions to the community, contributions to his teammates and baseball performances. The baseball player is generally chosen by the fans in the form of voting.


This award was originally named the Commissioner’s Award. However, it was renamed the Roberto Clemente Award in 1973 after the death of MLB Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente during a plane crash while he was delivering supplies to Nicaragua to help the people there following an earthquake. The award was first given to baseball players in 1971.Willie Mays was the first ever player to be honored with this award. Almost all the teams have their players receive the award over the years.
