Alex Bregman is in the last year of the six-year, $100 million contract extension he signed in 2019 with the Houston Astros. Earlier in the season, it was thought that the Astros would extend their third baseman like they did with second baseman Jose Altuve.
However, Dana Brown and his team took a wait-and-watch approach with Bregman and there appears to be no extension in sight—making Bregman a free agent this winter. MLB Insider Zachary Rymer predicts possible landing spots for him next season, which include the New York Yankees.
"As long as Bregman remains on this track, he's going to enter the market as a legitimate candidate for a $200 million deal," Rymer said via Bleacher Report on Thursday.
"That would limit his market, but some notable teams could be in the mix for a big-ticket third baseman. The Yankees could use one, as could the (Los Angeles Dodgers), (Seattle Mariners), and maybe the (New York Mets) and the (Washington Nationals) if the latter indeed wants to get back in the spending game."
Bregman and the Astros did not get off to a strong start, thereby putting doubts in the club's front office about the possible extension. However, the Astros have surged their way back to the top of the AL West division, and Bregman is hitting slightly below his career average (.251).
Zachary Rymer feels Alex Bregman will return to Houston
There's a good chance Bregman re-signs with the Astros, with Rymer feeling his swing fits better at Minute Maid Park. Bregman is expected to sign a seven-year, $210 million contract to return to Houston.
"Bregman's swing fits better at Minute Maid Park than it does anywhere else. And as noted earlier, the Astros are slated for a windfall of flexibility this winter," Rymer said.
Even Brown mentioned working on an offer for Bregman earlier in the season. However, the trail went cold after the third baseman got off to an underwhelming start to the season.
With everything going back on track, there's a good chance the front office will make an offer to his agent, Scott Boras.
