Gerrit Cole's contributions to UCLA Bruins success
Growing up in California, Gerrit Cole slowly made a name for himself as one of the best pitchers in the school leagues. After graduating from Orange Lutheran High School, he was picked by the New York Yankees in the 2008 MLB Draft but instead chose to go to college with UCLA.
In 2009, in just his freshman year Gerrit Cole was given the responsibility of becoming UCLA's regular Friday night starter. In his sophomore year, Cole along with Trevor Bauer and Danny Hutlzen led the team to becoming the second-best club in all of college baseball. They made their way to the College World Series where they were beaten by the South Carolina Gamecocks.
In 2011 in his junior year, Gerrit Cole was picked by the Pittsburgh Pirates as the first overall pick in the MLB Draft. Before Cole, the Bruins' previous highest pick was Tim Leary that came in the year 1979. After his pick, the future Cy Young winner opened up about his decision to join UCLA for college.
“I feel like it was the correct decision,” Cole had said. “I wanted to be a Bruin and go to the College World Series and win the Pac-10. We really wanted to instill a new tradition. I have no regrets. I enjoyed my time there, and I enjoyed school.”
Cole was made a member of the 2022 UCLA Bruins Hall of Fame. After stints with Pirates and Astros in the MLB, Cole finally made his way back to Yankees. He is currently the team's ace and will be gunning to go for the 2025 season.
