MLB analyst Dani Wexelman on Friday shared her thoughts on the Detroit Tigers' reported interest in third baseman Alex Bregman. Bregman officially entered free agency after the conclusion of the 2024 season.
During her appearance on MLB Network Radio, Wexelman shared that she views Bregman as an excellent match for Detroit, noting the potential reunion with A.J. Hinch.
"I like the direction Detroit's heading, I like that they have a ton of young guys, but I love the idea of the veteran corner infielder who's got postseason World Series experience reuniting with A.J. Hinch," she said.
"I can see Alex Bregman in Detroit, I think he fits really nicely in this lineup, and balances them out too, they got a ton of lefties in this lineup."
Bregman previously played under Hinch’s leadership for three seasons while Hinch served as the Houston Astros’ manager from 2015 to 2019, a period that included a World Series title. Hinch and the Tigers also faced Bregman and the Astros in the 2024 postseason, where Detroit eliminated the AL West champions.
Why Alex Bregman may end up in Detroit
Since the end of the 2024 regular season, the future of two-time All-Star Alex Bregman has been a popular topic of debate. While there was initially a strong chance Bregman would stay in Houston, negotiations reportedly stalled after Astros management allegedly refused the contract demands of Bregman's agent Scott Boras.
Houston’s acquisitions of Isaac Paredes and Christian Walker also suggest the organization may be prepared to move on from Bregman.
Other franchises reportedly interested in Bregman include the New York Yankees, New York Mets, Philadelphia Phillies, Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers. However, the Mets recently handed Juan Soto the largest contract in baseball history, making it unlikely they will also pursue Bregman with a big offer.
The Red Sox appear focused on rebuilding their pitching staff, while the Yankees may stick with Oswaldo Cabrera or DJ LeMahieu at third base. The Phillies could still express interest, but as spring training approaches, the Tigers might emerge as the most realistic landing spot, according to Chron.
The Tigers have the cash to sign the two-time World Series champion and a young roster that would benefit from his veteran presence. Given Bregman’s successful history with Hinch, his addition could position the Tigers as dark-horse contenders in the 2025 season.
