The Houston Astros have made their intentions clear regarding re-signing Alex Bregman. The infielder is currently a free agent and is considering leaving Space City if the right price comes along.
Ahead of the Winter Meetings in Dallas, manager Joe Espada spoke to reporters about getting Bregman to sign an extension with the team as soon as possible. He referred to Bregman as their "priority" in rounding out the roster for next season.
“We're doing everything in our power to get that done,” Espada said. “I know what he represents, what he means to this organization. I think Dana and the staff and all of us are on the same page in making this our No. 1 priority. So we are trying really hard to bring Alex Bregman back.”
Alex Bregman has only played for the Astros during his Major League career. Debuting in 2016, he has been part of the team’s dynasty, which has made the playoffs every season since and won two World Series titles.
He hit .260 with 75 RBIs, including 26 home runs and made major contributions on defense at third base, winning his first Gold Glove award.
Astros rivaled by Red Sox in pursuit of Alex Bregman
As per reports, the Astros have offered Bregman a six-year, $156 million deal, which would make him the highest-paid player in franchise history. However, this offer may be surpassed by the Boston Red Sox, who are strong contenders to land the third baseman, according to insider Robert Murray.
Speaking on "The Baseball Insiders Podcast," Murray said Red Sox manager Alex Cora, who coached the Astros before taking the top job in Boston, could lure Bregman to the team due to their close relationship.
"Seeing Alex Cora openly gush about Bregman, that's not surprising. They have plenty of ties going back to their days together in Houston and he would be a great fit in Boston," Murray said.
The Red Sox are reeling after missing out on Juan Soto and are expected to spend heavily, especially after reportedly being willing to sign Soto for around $700 million.
The Astros, meanwhile, will have luxury tax calculations in mind, having gone past the CBT for the first time last year. There are also indications that players like Kyle Tucker could be traded to make room.
