Prior to his coaching career, Thomson also played baseball as a catcher mainly in the minor leagues for the Detroit Tigers. He was also a member of Team Canada at the 1984 Summer Olympics.
After retiring as a player, Rob Thomson worked for and coached the New York Yankees from 1990-2017. He served as the third base coach and gradually also worked as first base coach and bench coach.
