He was regarded as Japan's top pitcher in Nippon Professional Baseball before moving on to Major League Baseball. Darvish was a member of the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters in the Nippon Professional Baseball.

Many former players also graduated from there including Kazuhiro Sasaki and Takashi Salto. Darvish led his team to four straight appearances in national tournaments. During his senior year, Darvish attracted national recognition when he pitched a no-hitter against Kumamoto Technical High School in the first round of the 76th National High School Baseball Invitation Tournament.
