The 2014 ICC T20 World Cup final was played between India and Sri Lanka on April 6, 2014 at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Dhaka.
After putting India in to bat first, Sri Lanka restricted them to a below-par score of 130 runs for the loss of four wickets. The Lankan bowlers built pressure right from the start, taking crucial wickets in key phases and applying a break on the flow of runs.
India lost Ajinkya Rahane in the second over after Angelo Matthews uprooted his stumps to give Sri Lanka the perfect start. Virat Kohli then joined Rohit Sharma to steady the ship but the Sri Lankan bowlers maintained a tight line which kept the scoring rate around six.
After a 60-run partnership for the second wicket, Rohit was caught by Senanayake off Rangana Herath’s bowling. Halfway through the innings, India were struggling to increase their run rate.
Kohli was still at the crease and was middling the ball well. Yuvraj Singh came in next but wasn’t at his best and got out in the 18th over after scoring 11 runs off 21 deliveries.
Indian batters weren’t able to accelerate the innings in the death overs even though Kohli crossed the 50-run mark. Sri Lankan bowlers kept him quiet and Kohli was unable to hit boundaries regularly. He got out after scoring a fighting 77 off 58 balls on the last ball of the innings, with Senanayake affecting a run out.
Nuwan Kulasekara, Mathews, and Herath shared a wicket apiece while Senanayake and Lasith Malinga went wicketless. But all the bowlers conceded less than 30 runs in their four overs showcasing a brilliant bowling performance. India set Sri Lanka a 131-run target in the summit clash.
In reply, Sri Lanka lost Kusal Perrera on the first ball of the second over, just the start India were looking for. Experienced batters Mahela Jayawardene and Tillakaratne Dilshan took the Lankan innings forward, scoring at a rate of seven runs per over, well ahead of the initial asking rate. But Ravichandran Ashwin sent Dilshan back to the pavilion in the sixth over after he scored 18 runs off 16 balls. Four overs later, Jayawardene was dismissed as he struggled to score runs at a brisk pace.
The scoreboard read 65/3 in 9.5 overs. The Lankans were on track with the required run rate. India were in a similar position at the halfway stage, having lost a wicket less than Sri Lanka. The match was wide open with 66 runs required in the last 10 overs. The pitch wasn’t an easy one to bat on, but Kumar Sangakkara kept his nerves in the biggest game of the tournament.
Following Thirimane’s dismissal in the 13th over, Sangakkara took on the responsibility of taking his team home alongside Thisara Perera. The southpaw completed a brilliant fifty in just 33 deliveries under pressure with the help of six fours and a six. Perera gave him able support and scored a quickfire 23 off 14 balls, striking Ashwin for a boundary down the ground to win the title for Sri Lanka.
This was Sangakkara’s last T20I match and he got a fitting farewell as Sri Lanka won their first T20 World Cup.
