The Japan Open is a men’s professional tennis tournament which is held annually at Tokyo, Japan. It is the oldest Asian ATP tournament, and takes place at the Ariake Tennis Park. It is an ATP-500 level competition which was founded way back in 1915. In 2018, the Japan Open switched venues to the Musashino Forest Sports Plaza, due to the Ariake Coliseum being renovated for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. It is played on outdoor hard courts, and ranks among the top 500-level tournaments across the tennis calendar. The 2024 edition is the 49th time that the Japan Open will be featured as a professional competition.

Ben Shelton is the men’s singles defending champion at the 2024 ATP Japan Open. However, home favorite Kei Nishikori is also a former champion and has tasted widespread success at the event - he won in 2012 and 2014.

Japan Open History

The initial All-Japan Championships was started way back in 1915, and was a men’s only tournament. Later in 1924, a women’s competition was also introduced. In the years after World War II, the event came to be known as the Japan International Championships up until the 1960s.

The Japan Open made its ATP Tour debut in 1972, making it the oldest and longest running ATP-level competition in Asia. After 2008, the Japan Open was no longer a combined event for men and women; the WTA hosted a separate Pan Pacific Open in the month of October.

As a matter of fact, the Japan Open has been played on other surfaces in the past, such as outdoor clay (1973-75 and 1978-81) and indoor hard (2018).
