Michael Gough: A Brief Biography
Michael Gough is an English former domestic cricketer and umpire who was born on December 18, 1979 in County Durham, England.
He was a right-handed batsman and was also used as a right-arm off-break bowler. Gough is a member of ICC International Panel of Umpires, representing the England and Wales Cricket Board and currently serves as an international umpire.
Early Career
A right-hand opening batsman, Michael Gough looked to have a promising career ahead of him. Michael Gough was appointed as the captain and led the England Under-19 side and in 2002, he averaged over 50 for Durham but a season later, he quit playing cricket.
With his performance in two Youth Test matches in 1997, he impressed enough to become a fully fledged member of the Durham side.
In 67 first class matches for Durham, Gough managed to score 2952 runs with an average of 25.44 which included 2 tons and 15 half-centuries. He also took 30 wickets at an average of 45.
He also played against Australia, Pakistan and New Zealand Under-19s.
Umpiring Career
Gough appeared for his umpiring exams along with working in his father's shop and in 2006 he was appointed to the ECB's reserve list at the age of 27. Three years later he was appointed to the full list of first-class umpires.
Gough officiated his first game in April 2006 in the Second XI Championship. However, he made his debut as an international umpire in the year 2013. Since his debut, he has umpired in several ODI games and Twenty20 Internationals.
During the 2015 Cricket World Cup, Gough was selected as one of the twenty umpires to stand in matches, where he was the on-field umpire in three group stage matches.
On July 28, 2016 he stood in his first Test match, between New Zealand and Zimbabwe at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo.
