The LPGA Tour travels this week to France to play the Amundi Evian Championship. It is the fourth Major of the season, played at its regular venue at the Evian Resort in Evian-Les-Bains, July 11-14.
The purse for the 2024 Amundi Evian Championship is $8 million, an increase of $1.5 million over the 2023 edition. A year ago, Celine Boutier became the first Frenchwoman to win the tournament and had a $1 million paycheck.
The winner's share of the 2024 Amundi Evian Championship has not yet been revealed. However, if the usual ratio on the LPGA Tour is maintained (between 15% and 16%), the winner would be receiving approximately $1.25 million.
The event's purse has seen a remarkable increase since its founding. From a purse of $232,500 in 1994 (the year of its founding), it went to $1.8 million in 2000, $3.25 million in 2008 and $6.5 million in 2022.
The Amundi Evian Championship will have in its field the main stars of world golf. The list is headed by World No. 1 Nelly Korda, who will arrive after missing the cut in three consecutive tournaments (two Majors).
The defending champion, Celine Boutier, will also be one of the players to watch and undoubtedly the local favorite. During 2024, Boutier has not been able to come close to the results of the previous season, when she won four tournaments, including her first Major.
Boutier has posted just one top 10s in 14 LPGA Tour events this season and has not played on the Ladies European Tour.
A look at the history of the Amundi Evian Championship
The Amundi Evian Championship has been played since 1994, although it was initially a Ladies European Tour event. From 2000, the LPGA Tour co-sanctioned the event, but it was not until 2013 that it became one of the Majors of women's golf.
The tournament has been played since its foundation at the Evian Resort Golf Club in Evian-Les-Bains. The course is situated more than 1,500 feet above sea level, is currently par 71 and is 6,523 yards.
The 'aggregate' record for the event is 263, set by In Gee Chun when he won in 2016. The 'To par' record (21 under) was set by Juli Inkster in 2003 and equaled by Chun 13 years later.
As for the course record, it is 61 and has been achieved by three players: Leona Maguire, Jeong-eun Lee and Hyo-joo Kim.
The tournament has been attracting the best players in the world since before it became one of the Majors of the season. The tournament's top winner is Sweden's Helen Alfredsson (3), while Laura Davies, Annika Sörenstam and Ai Miyazato are the other multi-winners.
Stars such as Suzann Pettersen, Angela Stanford, Lydia Ko, Anna Nordqvist, Minjee Lee and Brooke Henderson have also played and won at the Evian Resort.
