The Charles Schwab Cup is similar to the PGA Tour's FedEx Cup. PGA Tour Champions players accumulate points based on their results throughout the season to qualify for the playoffs.

As on the PGA Tour, there are three playoff tournaments. The top 72 qualify for the Dominion Energy Charity Classic, the top 54 qualify for the Simmons Bank Championship and the top 36 qualify for the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship.

The big difference from the PGA Tour is that on the senior circuit, the winner of the Charles Schwab Cup Championship is not necessarily the winner of the Charles Schwab Cup. Most recently, in the 2023 season, Steve Stricker won the Cup and Steven Alker won the Cup Championship.

In fact, only three players have won both the Cup and the final tournament in the same season: Bernhard Langar (2010, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2018), Tom Lehman (2012) and Kevin Sutherland (2017).

Bernhard Langer is the all-time leading Cup winner with six titles. Jim Thorpe and Tom Watson have won the final tournament three times.

The 2024 Charles Schwab Cup leaderboard is headed by Ernie Els, but he trails Steven Alker by just over 100 points. Other notable players in the field include Major champions Padraig Harrington, Y.E. Yang, Retief Goosen, Bernhard Langer, Darren Clarke and Stewart Cink.

According to Golf Monthly, 10 players have a chance to win the Charles Schwab Cup. They are Els, Alker, Harrington, Yang, Stephen Ames, Richard Green, K.J. Choi, Ricardo Gonzalez, Paul Broadhurst and Jerry Kelly.

The top six could win the Cup outright if they win the final tournament, but they could also win it with a different type of result. The aspirations of the bottom four depend on them winning the tournament and those above them not finishing in the top positions.
