The 2024 Curtis Cup is currently taking place at the Sunningdale Golf Club in Sunningdale, England. After the first round, Team Ireland and Great Britain have tied Team USA with a score of 3-3.
Regarded as one of the most prestigious women's amateur tournaments, the biannual event has captured the attention of golf enthusiasts worldwide. The first round's tie has prompted both captains, Catriona Matthew of Great Britain and Ireland and Meghan Stasi of the USA, to carefully evaluate their foursomes and fourball match selections for the second day.
Team USA had grabbed a 2-1 lead early in the day. However, Ireland's Sara Byrne chipped in for a birdie on the 17th hole, securing a victory for her and world number one amateur, Lottie Woad. Eager to win the Curtis Cup on home soil, Team Great Britain and Ireland rallied to win the fourball matches 2-1, resulting in a dramatic 3-3 tie at the end of the first round.
Delighted by her side's performance, here's what Great Britain and Ireland's non-playing captain, Catriona Matthew, had to say about the day's proceedings: (via USGA)
"I’m absolutely delighted. At one point this morning it looked like we were going to be beaten three-nil, but then we had a good comeback. The standard of golf has been pretty amazing. The Americans have made a lot of birdies, we've made a lot of birdies, and it was exciting out there in the four-balls. I can see in the team that their confidence is growing just from that finish there this afternoon."
Team USA's Asterisk Talley impressed the crowd with her stellar performance. The 15-year-old and her teammate Jasmine Koo defeated their opponents 5-4. Melanie Green and Rachel Kuehn also played well in their matches.
Kuehn, a three-time Curtis Cup player, won her match 6-4 with her impressive short game skills. Here's what the USA golfer had to say about the result (via-USGA):
"I don't think any of us could have dreamed it up any better. The weather has been absolutely perfect. The golf course is immaculate in layout and condition. Obviously we're up against a crowd for the GB&I team but we have some friends and family here so the atmosphere is incredible. I think we got out of the gates running in the morning, made a birdie on the first and we never really took our foot off the gas. Melanie played great and I tried to hold up my end of the bargain.”
