The Grant Thornton Invitational is the only mixed-team tournament played at the highest level of golf in the world. The field is made up of 16 teams consisting of one PGA Tour player and one LPGA Tour player.

This tournament had its predecessor in the JCPenney Classic, an event that was played under various names from 1960 to 1967 and from 1976 to 1999.

At the time, that tournament attracted many top players, including Sam Snead, Chi Chi Rodriguez, Curtis Strange, Tom Kite, Fred Couples, Davis Love III and John Daly on the men's side. Mickey Wright, Kathy Whitworth, Nancy Lopez, Beth Daniel, JoAnne Carner, Juli Inkster and Laura Davis played on the women's side.

What is the format of the Grant Thornton Invitational?

The event will be played in three rounds of 18 holes with a different format in each round. The first two rounds will be played in fairly common formats, while the third and final round will be played in a less familiar one.

The first day will be played in a scramble format. In this format, each player hits his tee shot and then both players decide which of the two balls is in a better lie. From that point, both players take their next shot and repeat the process until the ball is holed. The lowest score between team members is the team score for each hole.

For the second round, the format chosen is foursomes or alternate shot. In this format, the two players play the same ball and alternate hitting it. One player will tee off on the even-numbered holes and the other on the odd-numbered ones.

The third round is played in a modified four-ball format. The idea is that each player hits their tee shot and then switches to play with their partner's ball until it is holed. The lowest score between team members is the team score for each hole.
