A look at the history of the Hero World Challenge

The tournament now known as the Hero World Challenge was first held in January 2000 as the Williams World Challenge. Tiger Woods has always hosted the event.

This tournament has always had one of the most limited fields in professional golf. In the beginning, the field consisted of only 16 players, later expanded to 18 and then to the current 20.

Currently, the top 17 available players in the world rankings are invited to the tournament, while the TW Foundation offers three sponsor exemptions. In previous editions of the tournament, the winners of certain PGA Tour events, such as the Players Championship, were invited.

Given the characteristics of the field, the players who have won the event are among the best of the last two and a half decades on the PGA Tour. In this case, there are Woods himself (who has won five times), Padraig Harrington, Vijay Singh, Zach Johnson, Jordan Spieth, Bubba Watson, Jon Rahm, Viktor Hovland and Scottie Scheffler.

Since 2015, the tournament has been held at the Albany Golf Club in the Bahamas. The previous regular venue was Sherwood Country Club, California, which hosted the event between December 2000 and the 2013 edition. In addition, the January 2000 edition was played at Grayhawk Golf Club, Arizona, and the 2014 edition was played at Isleworth Golf & Country Club, Florida.

It was during the 2014 edition that Jordan Spieth set the "aggregate" and "to par" records for the event (26 under 262). The record at Albany belongs to Bubba Watson (25 under 263, 2015), while the record at Sherwood was 22 under 266 (Davis Love III in 2000 and Tiger Woods in 2007).
