TOTO Japan Classic's history at a glance
The tournament now known as the TOTO Japan Classic is one of the oldest events still played on the LPGA Tour calendar (not counting some Majors). The event was founded in 1973 and became part of the official LPGA Tour schedule in 1976.
The first winner was Jan Ferraris. The event has always attracted the best players of each era and its past champions include legends such as Donna Caponi, Nancy Lopez and Pat Bradley.
Annika Sorenstam set an extraordinary record by winning the event five times in a row (2001, 02, 03, 04 and 05). Other multiple winners include Jiyai Shin (3), Patty Sheehan (2), Debbie Massey (2), Betsy King (2), Woo-Soon Ko (2), Liselotte Neumann (2), Momoko Ueda (2) and Shanshan Feng (2).
Sorenstam set another record in the 2003 edition, which was shortened to three rounds, with a score of 24-under 192. The 72-hole record of 22-under 266 was set by defending champion Mone Inami (2023).
The 2024 edition would be the 15th time that Seta Golf Course will host the Japan Classic. The event has been held at some of Japan's most prestigious venues, including the Taiheiyo Club and Kashikojima Country Club.
The tournament has been sponsored by some of the country's most important companies, including Mazda (1980-1992) and Mizuno (1976-1979 and 1999-2014). Since 2015, it has been sponsored by the toilet manufacturer TOTO Ltd.
