The Hero Dubai Desert Classic has been played since 1989 and has been part of the European Tour calendar since its inception. In 2022, it became part of the Rolex Series, a group of tournaments equivalent to the PGA Tour's Signature Events.
Throughout its history, the tournament has attracted the major players on the European Tour, as well as some Americans. Notable winners include Seve Ballesteros, Ernie Els, Fred Couples, Colin Montgomerie, Jose Maria Olazabal, Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau.
Dechambeau holds the 72-hole tournament record of 24-under 264, set during his 2019 victory. In his 2019 triumph, Dechambeau, a two-time major champion, secured the largest reported margin of victory in the event, defeating Matt Wallace by seven strokes.
McIlroy is the all-time leading winner at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic with four titles to his credit. The list of multiple winners includes Els and Woods.
The Dubai Desert Classic was the first European Tour event to be played on the Arabian Peninsula. Five other events are currently played regularly in the region.
The tournament is played at the Emirates Golf Club, the course of which was the first grass course in the Middle East. In addition to the Dubai Desert Classic, the Omega Dubai Ladies Classic of the Ladies European Tour is played there every year.
