The US Women's Open is less than 24 hours away, and the golf world is getting ready to witness the premier event. While all the attention is on the favorites, there are also a few underdogs who could end up winning their first major during the tournament.
Major champions make up eleven of the Top 15 Rolex Rankings members. Three of the four who have not accomplished this feat yet stand out due to their caliber of performance in both the current and previous seasons. Here, we look at these three players and why they stand a chance of winning their maiden major:
#1 Charley Hull
Charley Hull, a two-time LPGA Tour winner and three time Ladies European Tour winner, has been out of the winner's circle since 2022. However, both the previous and current seasons have been quite successful for her.
Hull has participated in 31 competitions since 2023, spanning both tours, with the best results being no fewer than seven second place finishes. Two of those runner up finishes came at major championships (2023 US Women's Open and 2023 AIG Women's Open).
During this period, Hull was also vital to Europe's success at the Solheim Cup. Her results have led her to consistently remain in the Top 10 of the world rankings since August 2023.
#2 Rose Zhang
Rose Zhang has excelled in golf at every stage of her development, and her start as a professional has been no exception. In the 23 tournaments that she has played since she turned professional, she has already accumulated two victories and six other top-10s.
Three of her top-10s were achieved in major championships during the previous season. In 2024, she has juggled between her duties as a student at Stanford University and her professional career. She has still managed to play in eight events, with one win and two other Top 10s. Zhang only participated in 22 top-level competitions before breaking into the world ranking.
Also in Zhang's favour is the fact that the 2024 US Women's Open will be played in Pennsylvania, which is at a distance of less than 190 miles from the courses where she earned both her victories.
#3 Xiyu Lin
Xiyu Lin is a 10-season veteran on the LPGA Tour, but she is still looking for her first win at this level. However, she has been playing perhaps the best golf of her career this season, evidence of which is that she has not missed a single cut in 10 events.
In addition, Lin has managed three top-10s, including a T4 at the Cognizant Founders Cup. Her game has been so consistent that she has remained in the Top 15 of the Rolex Rankings for more than 50 weeks.
