The Sentry will kick off the 2025 season on the PGA Tour and will be played from this Thursday, January 2. The field will consist of all of last season's tournament winners and members of the FedEx Cup Top 50.

However, several players will be missing from The Sentry field. Those who will be absent from the event have a variety of reasons, ranging from injuries to other professional commitments.

The Sentry is also the first Signature Event of the season. As such, those who miss out will be missing out on one of the highest purses ($20 million) and a huge amount of FedEx Cup points (700 for the winner).

#1 Scottie Scheffler

Scottie Scheffler suffered a hand injury on Christmas Day that required surgery. He was forced to withdraw from The Sentry and will begin his season at The American Express if his hand recovers in time.

Scheffler is ranked number one in the world and was a heavy favorite to win the title before withdrawing from the tournament. He is coming off a season in which he won seven PGA Tour titles, the Olympic gold medal, and the unofficial Hero World Challenge.

#2 Rory McIlroy

Rory McIlroy won two PGA Tour events and finished in the top 50 in the FedEx Cup in 2024, earning him a spot in the opening field. However, McIlroy will not be in Hawaii due to other commitments.

The Northern Irishman usually starts his seasons on the DP World Tour, especially the events in Dubai. In 2025, he will defend the title he won at the 2024 Hero Dubai Desert Classic. In fact, McIlroy has never played The Sentry in his career.

#3 Shane Lowry

Shane Lowry is another European player who finished in the FedEx Cup top 50 (T9) but will not be playing in the season opener. Although the field for the Hero Dubai Desert Classic has not yet been officially announced, it is very likely that the Irishman will start his season at this event.

#4 Tommy Fleetwood

Tommy Fleetwood also finished in the Top 50 of the FedEx Cup (20th) and will also miss the PGA Tour season opener. In his case, he will be in the Team Cup to be played between the teams from Great Britain and Ireland, and Continental Europe.

The event will be played from January 10-12. Fleetwood will play for the British team led by Justin Rose, while Francesco Molinari will be the opposing captain.
