The Open Championship 2024 is scheduled to start with its first round on Thursday, July 18 at Royal Troon Golf Club course in Troon, Scotland. The final Major of the year features a stellar field of some of the best golfers in the world including current World Nos. 1 and 2 Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy, 2024 PGA Championship winner Xander Schauffele and 2024 US Open winner Bryson DeChambeau.
However, some big names will be missing from the field this week. These include LIV golfer Sergio Garcia who tried to qualify for the Major but failed to make it through the qualifying round.
Here are five such popular names who will not be playing at The Open Championship 2024:
Five famous golfers not playing at The 152nd Open Championship
#1 Sergio Garcia
Sergio Garcia is one of the big names missing from the field of The Open Championship this year.
The Spaniard recently won LIV Golf Andalucía by defeating Indian golfer Anirban Lahiri in an incredible playoff. However, even after winning the Saudi-circuit event, he will miss the Major this week.
Garcia competed in the qualifying round for the Major but failed to qualify. He had played in the US Open last month and surprised fans with a T12 finish.
#2 Ian Poulter
Another LIV golfer who will not tee off at Royal Troon this week is Ian Poulter. The English golfer has not played in any Major since 2022 after joining LIV Golf
Poulter last played at The Open Championship in 2022 when he tied for 62nd place. The veteran has won 17 professional events in his career but is still seeking victory at the Majors.
#3 Richard Bland
LIV golfer Richard Bland astonished fans with two back-to-back victories in Senior Majors. He won the 2024 Senior PGA Championship and then defeated Hiroyuki Fujita in a playoff to win the 2024 US Senior Open.
However, despite his remarkable performance in Senior Majors, the English golfer will miss The Open Championship 2024. He finished tied at 33rd place at last year's Major.
#4 Colin Montgomerie
Veteran Scottish golfer Colin Montgomerie will not be playing at The Open Championship 2024. He last played in the Major in 2016 and has not participated in any Major events since. He made headlines this week after legendary golfer Tiger Woods took a jibe at him for not making it to the field at Royal Troon.
Montgomerie recently commented on Tiger Woods' form in an interview with The Times, stating that it's time for the American golfer to retire from golf. Tiger Woods responded to his remarks during a press conference for The Open Championship 2024 on Tuesday, July 16:
“Well, as a past [Open] champion, I’m exempt until I’m 60. Colin’s not. He’s not a past champion, so he’s not exempt. So he doesn’t get the opportunity to make that decision. I do," Woods said.
#5 Harry Hall
Harry Hall won the 2024 ISCO Championship last week but did not make it to The Open Championship.
The Englishman had a dramatic win in the final of the PGA Tour event last week when he competed in a five-man playoff to win the tournament. However, his impressive performance did not continue into the qualifiers for Royal Troon. Hall has only played in a single Major so far.
