The 2024 Solheim Cup will begin on 13th September 2024. After losing the last tournament in Spain, the US team is all set to welcome their rivals on their home soil at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville, Virginia.

The biennial women's competition between the US and Europe is one of the most important fixtures in the season calendars. Last year, Spaniard Carlota Ciganda triumphed over US's Nelly Korda in front of the King of Spain. Now, the US team would be looking for redemption.

With all the major tournaments wrapped up, the qualification period for the 2024 Solheim Cup is officially over. Each team would consist of 12 players. This week the captains of both sides made their picks for the wildcard players.

European team captain, Suzann Peterson, chose Georgia Hall, Anna Nordqvist, Emily Kristine Pederson and Albane Valenzuela to join the eight automatic qualifiers. Madelene Sagstrom, Maja Stark, Charley Hull, Celine Boutier, Leona Maguire, Carlota Ciganda, and Linn Grant had qualified for the team previously.

US captain Stacy Lewis decided on Jennifer Kupcho, Sarah Schmelzel and Lexi Thompson to join the team. Nelly Korda, Lilia Vu, Lauren Coughlin, Ally Ewing, Allisen Corpuz, Andrea Lee, Rose Zhang, Alison Lee and Megan Khang were the automatic qualifiers.

With limited seats on the table, it is natural for some top names to not make the cut into the team. Here's taking a look at the top 5 names who missed out on the 2024 Solheim Cup.

Top 5 names to miss out on the 2024 Solheim Cup

1) Angel Yin

US golfer Angel Yin not making the team would have come as a major surprise to fans. After being a runner-up at the 2023 Chevron Championship and placing T6 at the AIG Women's Open, Yin was the captain's pick at the previous Solheim Cup. Proving the decision right, she won two out of three matches.

She missed out on the automatic qualification by one place. Andrea Lee was the last golfer to make the automatic qualification cut. All three wildcard players on the US team have a lower ranking than Angel Yin.

2) Nanna Koerstz Madsen

Danish golfer Nanna Koerstz Madsen had finished 1-1-1 at the 2021 Solheim Cup. This season, her form was consistent with top-20 finishes between May and June. She later placed T8 at the CPKC Women's Open and T10 at the AIG Women's Open.

Despite a good performance, she couldn't reach the cutoff ranking. She is currently ranked higher than wildcard Emily Kristine Pederson.

3) Alexa Pano

US golfer Alexa Pano has shown a lot of mettle at the young age of 20. She picked up her first LPGA victory at the 2023 ISPS Handa World Invitational. She was also a runner-up at the 2024 Hilton Grand Vacation Tournament of Champions and placed T10 at the AIG Women's Open.

Pano couldn't reach the qualifying rank. Her not making the team is a minor disappointment given her form this season. However, she has many years to go and her performance does hint at a great future.

4) Cheyenne Knight

US golfer Cheyenne Knight was the captain's pick at the previous Solheim Cup and posted 2-0-1 in her matches. She showed a good performance early on in the qualification period with top 10 finishes at the Hilton Grand Vacation Tournament of Champions and the LPGA Drive on Championship.

However, her form dwindled since then. She did come close to getting an automatic qualification but fell six places short in the US Solheim Cup points list.

5) Alexandra Forsterling

German golfer Alexandra Fosterling just had a bout of bad luck at this year's Solheim Cup selections. Charley Hull and Esther Henseleit secured their two automatic qualifications comfortably through the LET'S Solheim Cup points list.

Forsterling's only chance to qualify automatically was through the world rankings, where she fell behind. Wildcards Georgia Hall, Albane Valenzuela and Anna Nordqvist all had better rankings than her. And Emily Kristine Pederson was more experienced than Forsterling, making her the captain's choice.
