The groups for the opening round of the Open Championship have been set. On Thursday, all golfers will tee off with their group members, and certain groups will understandably be a little more popular than others. The ones with Tiger Woods or Rory McIlroy, for example, will have a lot of eyes on them this weekend. Here are some groups whom fans might look out for.
Groups to watch at the Open Championship
5) Rory McIlroy's group
Rory McIlroy is the primary reason to watch his group. It's his first Major since the collapse at Pinehurst, and while he played well last week, this is the true test. He is grouped with Max Homa and Tyrrell Hatton, two great golfers as well.
4) Scottie Scheffler's group
Scottie Scheffler's group will have all eyes on it, primarily for the sake of watching the World No. 1 and odds-on favorite. But fans will also get to see stars Jordan Spieth and Cameron Young, who shot a record-tying 59 earlier this year at the Travelers Championship.
3) Jon Rahm's group
At some point, Jon Rahm will put in a good performance like he's capable of. This may be the time he does it, and all eyes will be on the LIV Golf star. He's grouped with Tommy Fleetwood and the red-hot Robert MacIntyre, who is coming off a thrilling win at the Scottish Open last weekend.
2) Ludvig Aberg's group
Ludvig Aberg is always a favorite at the Majors. He hasn't won one yet, but he's been in them and played pretty well overall. But he's far from the only draw in his group, as US Open champion and fan favorite Bryson DeChambeau will be paired with him. These two could compete for the crown, and the group also features budding star Tom Kim.
1) Tiger Woods' group
Tiger Woods' group is made up of the 82-time PGA Tour winner, Xander Schauffele (2024 PGA Championship winner), and Patrick Cantlay (world number eight). It is as star-studded as it gets for the opening round of the Open Championship this year. While fans may turn out to watch Woods in this group, they'll also get to see two players who have played very well this year.
