The US Open is the next Major tournament on the golf docket. The third Major of the season, there are more than a few golfers who have never been able to grab this iconic trophy.
These range from young stars who just haven't had all that many opportunities to legendary veterans who are hoping for one last chance at immortality. Here are the best examples heading into June's Major event.
The best golfers without a US Open title
6) Phil Mickelson
Phil Mickelson is one of a few golfers who are within one Major title of a career Grand Slam, and that Major is the US Open. Unfortunately, he's a bit past his prime and not in particularly good form, so he's a long shot to finally complete the Slam. Nevertheless, he is one of the best golfers of his generation, so he deserves to be credited on a list like this.
5) Viktor Hovland
Viktor Hovland nearly broke through with a maiden Major victory at the 2024 PGA Championship. He shot very well for a solo third finish. He is a bright talent on the PGA Tour and will someday probably have a couple of Major wins to his name. Extremely talented, the 26-year-old has been in the top 10 of every Major except the US Open, so he's perhaps due for a strong performance.
4) Justin Thomas
Justin Thomas is a two-time Major winner. They were the same Major, though. He won the 2017 and 2022 PGA Championships, so he's still looking for a different trophy and list he can add his name to. He finished T8 at the tournament in 2020, so he hasn't exactly been close to victory. Either way, he has another shot in June.
3) Xander Schauffele
No longer on the list of golfers who haven't won a single Major at all, Xander Schauffele now has the unenviable task of trying to win different Major tournaments. The PGA Championship has been checked off, so now he will try to win back-to-back tournaments and become one of the golfers who have won at the US Open. He's in good form, so now is his best shot.
2) Ludvig Aberg
It's likely only a matter of time before Ludvig Aberg wins a Major, and it very well could be the next one on the schedule. He hasn't won one yet and has only competed in two, but he's one of the world's most talented golfers who hasn't yet won any Major competition. He faces stiff competition, but he will likely have good betting odds at the US Open.
1) Scottie Scheffler
Scottie Scheffler is a two-time Major winner, but he's never won the US Open. Both of his wins were at the Masters Tournament, so he's still looking to diversify his portfolio. He tied for second at the 2022 US Open.
Scheffler will presumably be the favorite up until the tournament actually begins, giving him a good shot at adding a third Major trophy to his mantle.
